Mentors have always held a special place in my life. Without mentors literally being a part of every stage of my life, I would not be who I am today. They have been there to guide, encourage, and provide invaluable information that saved me time, money, heartache and most importantly, wasted steps. Well what are ‘wasted steps?’ Wasted steps are unnecessary choices and decisions that are made by an inexperienced individual due to lack of expertise, information, or proper preparation. We all know what those steps look like–that relationship you got involved in that you would have avoided only if you would have consulted your mentor. Or maybe it was the car you bought with the high APR that had you eating Ramen noodles for six months. Whatever the misstep you took, it may have been avoided if you had the luxury of having a mentor guide you through a process.
As we embark on 2015, I charge all of us to wear yet another hat as that of mentor. A young woman or young man has been watching you, looks up to you, and is yearning for you to be that someone to be transparent with and share their life experiences. You have more to give than you think. All that is needed is consistent presence, transparency, and most importantly, love.
Below I’ve included a link to: www.nationalmentoringmonth.com where you can access information to get involved in the state where you live. Cheers to giving back. Happy mentoring.
